So this Sunday was a very exciting one for me because Justin Rasch had a Southern California premier of his Stop-mo film: Gerald's Last Day at the historic Rialto Theater in Pasadena, California. Actually, I should correct myself a bit. This premier was not only for Justin, but also his wife Shel and their entire family. Congrats all around for producing a very moving, and inspiring movie. Every great thing you've heard about this movie is true. And as a little sampler, here's the trailer...
Let's go beyond the movie for a moment. When my family parked, and got out of the car, we could see the sign for the Rialto Theater. But as we walked closer, Gerald's Last Day was spelled out on the marquee, and it hit me that I was really excited.
This was going to be more than just another trip to a movie theater where you shell out your cash, watch some high end special FX, and then go home wondering what else you could have done with your time and money. This was a movie with substance. A story behind the story. This was a movie where you knew the guy who made it was sitting in the back row bitting his fingernails in anticipation to see how the crowd would react to very personal labor of love.
I got to the Rialto somewhat early, and I was glad to see that all of the puppets were set out. Not only that, but the plaster molds were laid out with some of the sheet music for the original score. I was also there early enough to meet Justin. I think that this is one of the moments I was looking forward to the most because Justin has been pretty consistent in posting comments not only on the Machine In Use Blog, but also a lot of the stuff I put up on StopMoShorts. I have to wonder, is his first impression of me the same as mine is of him? I certainly hope so.
Finally, one of the coolest things about the entire event, was that it was family friendly. My wife and I are part of a very large family, so it's always awesome to have things to do where the attendance of children is appreciated rather than looked upon as a nuisance. Not to mention... free M&M's.
Before I end this post, I want to say congrats again to Justin and his family for the wonderful piece of art they have created. I sincerely look forward to seeing what you produce in the future.
